In 2014, a night's lodging, per person, in a French Club Alpin (CAF) refuge (hut) along the GR5 and 52 ranges from €17 to €25 per person and the same amount again for dinner and breakfast. The frontier here is defined by the rushing River Doubs, in places deeply incised in a rocky gorge. One of the highlights of the hike in this area is the climb down a series of long, steep ladders, called (with a touch of exaggeration) Our trail left the Doubs at Villers-le-Lac (to rejoin the river at its source in Mouthe about six days later), and crossed rolling countryside, with occasional sections on country roads. We had not seen many other long-distance hikers on the trail so far, so we were pleased to meet Omar, a fellow American, in Spa. Water is everywhere: rivers, canals and ponds – not to mention the nearby North Sea, the source of great storms that sweep suddenly inland, with high winds, lightning and hail. The whole region was part of Germany from the end of the Franco-Prussian War (1871) until 1918, and a local Germanic language (Elsässisch) is still alive and well.The Vosges in general is a wooded landscape, but the GR5 route leads up through the forests to the open hill pastures, the Frontiers can be conflict zones in wartime, as seen in the Vosges in 1914.
